US Sailing at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres - Day 4

US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider athletes returned to action on Day 4 of ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyères and enjoyed yet another day of world-class weather in southern France, with breezes in the low teens and consistent sunshine.
In the women's 470, Annie Haeger (East Troy, Wisc.) and Briana Provancha (San Diego, Calif.) remain in 3rd place despite another stellar day which saw them score a 2,4. The top three boats (NZL, GBR and USA) are separated by only two points, and one of these three boats has won 7 of the 8 races sailed so far in the event.
In the men's 470, Stuart McNay (Providence, R.I.) and David Hughes (Miami, Fla.) experienced some misfortune in the day's first race, when their main halyard broke during the first tack of the first beat. "It didn't go the way we planned it," said Hughes. "We were basically swimming for an extended period trying to fix the halyard, but we couldn't get it sorted fast enough to finish the first race. Our second race wasn't great. We were unprepared for what was happening on the course." Despite two tough scores, the pair only dropped one spot in the standings, a testament to how consistent their performance has been so far in the event.
In the Laser Radial, Paige Railey enjoyed a strong day, posting a 1,9 to jump upwards to 9th overall. Hyères is the second event for the Rolex ISAF World Sailor of the Year and World Champion this year, after winning ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami in February.
The fight for the podium in Hyères got harder for Finn sailor Caleb Paine (San Diego, Calif.) who scored a 9,18 and dropped from 2nd to 4th overall. The ever-upbeat Californian responded simply by saying that tomorrow, on the final day of racing before the medal race, "it's time to get awesome!"
