J/24 Southern Areas during the Weymouth Regatta

by Bob Turner
7-8 July 2012

Despite the foreboding forecast, 13 teams arrived in Weymouth for the 2-day J24 Southern Area Championships. The event was held in conjunction with the Weymouth Keelboat Regatta, which ensured a busy bonus social programme. Sadly, the weather gods provided gale force south easterlies on day one, accompanied by driving rain, so Peter Jacobs the Race Officer, wisely decided that the best option was to head for the bar at Weymouth Sailing Club, for several injections of Palmers Beer or a double of Mount Gay both at an astounding price.

Day 2 saw perfect conditions with breezes from 7 to 15 knots in bright sunshine. Being a World Qualifying event, the competition was yet again extremely hot as several teams strived for the results they needed to qualify for the 2013 World Championships in Ireland. The form teams of Madeline, Electric Centre and Serco were well to the fore, but it was David Cooper from Plymouth in Jawbreaker who caught the eye with a very impressive and consistent series. Serco, helmed by Nathan Batchelor narrowly won the series, having recovered from a poor 9th in race one. Jawbreaker scored a convincing second place and Darren Stanbury held on to third. The first Westerly prize was won by Mark Lewers in Hijack.

Big thanks are due to the Yacht Clubs of Weymouth Regatta Committee chaired by Steve Dadd, Weymouth Sailing Club, sponsors Dean and Reddyhoff and English Braids, and local Class Captain Kenny Roebuck.

The final qualifier will be hosted by the J24 Plymouth Fleet on 29-30th September where we shall again look forward to more close racing in the World's premier International keelboat class.
