Zhik RS Eurocup at Fraglia Vela Riva, Lake Garda - Day 3

The Zhik Eurocup 2010 continues in grand style at Riva del Garda. Today the sun returned to shine on the mountains surrounding Upper Trentino Garda with southerly winds arriving on time allowing us to make-up for the race lost yesterday, for a total of three races for all classes present.

Yesterday the technical staff of Fraglia Vela Riva had insisted on proceeding with the races only if conditions allowed them to do so without excessive changes or drops in wind (it is for this reason that only one race took place yesterday). Today the competitors were rewarded with winds of 14 to 24 knots for the entire afternoon.

With two days remaining six races have been completed (the first discard was introduced today). There are no big surprises in the medal positions who are way ahead of the rest of the pack. In the RS200 Roger Gilbert and Jane William (sail no. 1286) have achieved five wins and a second followed in second place by Hivey-Hivey.

In the RS400 class Downer-Price are first in a fleet of 29 boats six points ahead of Sims-George. In the third place is Bone-Martin. After a “dnc” in today's first race, King-Brown took a first and a third giving them a good chance for a medal.

Steve Birbeck continues to dominate the RS600 class with five wins and a third while the competition is still open for the second and third places between Heissig and Chipperfield (with two points separating them).

There was some mast damage in the RS700 and RS800 classes that were racing on the windier course and where sometimes they had gusts of up to 24 knots. A good day for Alex Newton-Southon in the RS700 class with three straight wins which puts him ahead of John Heissig (4-2-5). Jerry Wales is third (2-4-4 today).

In the RS800s McGrane-Allen continue to dominate and after a fifth on the first day have taken firsts ever since. There is a tie of seventeen points for Deal-Page and Broughton-Wilson, second and third respectively.

Tomorrow the forecast predicts worsening weather which will probably bring the wind from the north. The operational staffs of Fraglia Vela Riva, however, are already preparing the courses for such eventualities.

The grand finals of the Zhik RS Eurocup 2010 took place today at Fraglia Vela Riva. This biennial event started on Monday with over 400 sailors, mostly British, at Riva del Garda and concluded in great style today.

The Zhik RS Eurocup 2010 finishes tomorrow Friday 30th July. It has been an event with a strong British presence and Fraglia Vela Riva has done its utmost to make the competitors and their staff feel welcome at Riva del Garda.

The RS Eurocup continued today at Fraglia Vela Riva with winds of 20 knots and one race completed. However, some bad weather in the area had initially held up the classic thermal breeze from the south.
