The 2022 UKFFA Championship Series got off to a great start with 30 boats competing at the Northern Championships at Lake Windermere where competitors came from 18 different clubs around the country.

The Championship continues with competitors travelling even further North for the Scottish Flying Fifteen Championships which are being hosted by Holy Loch Sailing Club in Sandbank, Dunoon over the weekend of 14 - 15 May.

The regatta is the second in the 2022 Championship Series. The Championship Series will serve as a qualification series for UK F15 sailors to compete as part of the UKFFA team at the Flying Fifteen World Championships held from 9 to 23 March 2023 in Fremantle, Australia.

The current Holy Loch Sailing Club and facilities date from 1973 and the Flying Fifteen has been a regular class sailed at the Loch for many of those years.

The village of Sandbank is famous in the history of yacht building in as much as two famous yards, Robertsons and Morris & Lorimer were side by side on the Loch shore.

The former built ‘Sceptre’ and ‘Sovereign’ the Americas Cup challengers.

Molly McLachlan (neé Lorimer) our 95 year old, sharp as a tack, honorary member, remembers the designer of the Flying Fifteen, Uffa Fox’s visits to the Holy Loch. Her father’s yard occupied the area where the marina now resides, adjacent to the HLSC Clubhouse.

Uffa brought his own boat, transporting it on the roof of his car!

Peter Collyer, Commodore of HLSC from 1959 - 61, told stories in his latter years, of his forthright discussions with Uffa on the design tolerances of the F15.

They were two feisty gentlemen who did much to assist the recovery of yachting after the cessation of hostilities!

Let us hope for a weekend of fair and steady winds, and favourable weather.
