RYA reveals latest Garmin membership offer

by Emma Slater, RYA 4 Mar 2015 12:45 GMT 4 March 2015

The RYA is delighted to unveil the latest offer from membership partners Garmin on their Garmin GPSMAP 78 and GPSMAP 78s handhelds.

From March until the end of August (30 August 2015) RYA members will be able to take advantage of a special discount of 30% on Garmin GPSMAP 78 and GPSMAP 78s handhelds; perfect for boating and water enthusiasts.

Garmin's handhelds are reliable, rugged, have a long battery life, waterproof and are even designed to float. Lightweight and portable, the Garmin GPSMAP 78 and 78s handhelds have a bright 2.6" LCD colour display and clear graphics making them simple and easy to use.

With a highly sensitive GPS receiver for optimum reception and performance, the devices also feature a special MOB (man overboard) button which shows distance and bearing to the position where the button was pressed.

"We're delighted to be offering RYA members a special discounted price on two of our favourite high performance handhelds", commented Chrissy Winchcombe, from Garmin.

"The GPSMAP 78 and GPSMAP 78s are popular products with boaters and watersport enthusiasts. With a highly sensitive GPS receiver for optimum reception and performance, the GPSMAP 78 and GPSMAP 78s are simple to use, waterproof and also designed to float. Both devices feature bright LCD colour display and a built-in worldwide basemap, or you can choose the bundle option which includes UK & Ireland BlueChart g2."

The GPSMAP 78s has a basemap with shaded contours. The built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass shows your heading even when you're standing still, without holding it level. Its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude, and you can even use it to plot barometric pressure over time to keep an eye on changing weather conditions.

The handhelds can be used on the water and on land. Depending on what activity you are doing and the level of map detail that you need, adding more maps is easy with Garmin's wide array of detailed marine, topographic and road maps, available via download and on microSD card. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don't have to worry about getting it wet.

"Garmin always provide our members with some fantastic offers and this one is no exception", commented RYA Membership Officer Gemma Garrett. "We are sure our members will find the handhelds extremely useful when out on the water."

Main functions include:

  • Highly sensitive GPS receiver for optimum reception and performance
  • Slot for microSDcard
  • USB interface
  • Wireless data transfers
  • Floats
  • MOB (man overboard) button: shows distance and bearing to the position where the button was pressed
  • 3-axis electronic compass and barometric altimeter (78s)
