Sailors at Hollowell raise £100 for RNLI
Two events took take place this weekend at Hollowell Sailing Club – Day 5 of the Saturday Summer Series and the annual RNLI Personal Handicap fundraiser on Sunday.
The Saturday Summer Series once again took place in very light winds and given the searing temperatures, many sailors stayed at home or in the club bar rather than venture onto the water. However a brave 20 still decided to compete in the two races of the day. Both races were won by Mike Playle, whose ability to seek out wind where none exists still continues to mystify other club members. Solo sailors Gerry Burnham and Keith Miller finished second and third in the first race; whilst in the final race, duo Lawrence Creaser and Teddy Middleton-Smith, in their ISO claimed second place, ahead of Solo sailor Keith Runacres.
Overall, Anthony Stevens continues to hang on to his lead in the Saturday Summer Series, with only three more days of the Series to run.
However, the main event this weekend was the RNLI Personal Handicap. In true club spirit a total of 34 boats took part in this annual fundraiser, with sailors of all ages competing in the three races.
The event raised £100 for the RNLI and was blessed with a reasonable breeze of around 11 mph.
Young Hazel McDonnell was the star of the event in her Optimist. She won two of the three races and the event overall. In fact, it was the young sailors who dominated the first race with Georgia King in her Topper finishing second and Teddy Middleton-Smith in a Laser Radial finishing third.
In the second race after lunch, the adults managed to save some face with Tim Robinson and the Playle duo gaining second and third places respectively.
By the final race, many of the younger sailors decided not to compete – perhaps in order to give their parents a sporting chance! So it was up to the Playle duo in their Wayfarer to steal first, ahead Laser sailors Tim Robinson and Simon King.
